It felt good to strip this shoot back to the real, raw and natural. I took my time before pressing the shutter, I intentionally composed some of the photos in a haphazard way to keep it looking real, and I tried not to obsess over the edits.
It’s the end of a chapter for Reverend Alice and her family at Inanda Seminary, and these photos represent the memories they have made and the connections they formed during this time.

3. Farewell shoot as the family prepare to emigrate.
Sometimes I’ll photograph a family only once, but often I’ll photograph the same family many times. Just this week I photographed a family whose wedding I shot 12 years ago. I know this sounds silly, but I consider a lot of my photography clients friends. Entering your home and playing with your children feels really intimate to me. By the time I’ve left, I’ll probably know what you’re reading, which cook books you like to use, and which kid is into which TV show. We might talk about breastfeeding and other parenting things. You’ll also know about me and my family. We might even send each other podcast links that evening 🤣
Connection is honestly the most rewarding thing about my job.
