Top 5 beach photo locations on the KZN North Coast
In KZN we are incredibly lucky with balmy beach weather year round. The winter mornings and evenings might be a bit fresh, but you’d be wise to brave the chill because winter is when we get the most spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
If you’re new to the area, remember that unlike the Western Cape, the sun rises over the sea here, so don’t expect a golden sunset over the sea. If strong sunlight is your vibe, you’ll be very happy with a morning shoot.
Here are my 5 all time favorite beach locations on the North Coast of KZN. Follow the Google links for their exact locations.
1. Thompson's Bay Rock pool
(hole in the wall)

One of Ballito’s main attractions is The Hole in the Wall. Dare to enter the hole and cross over the bridge, and you’ll find yourself on a (hopefully) secluded little beach. On the opposite side, you’ll find a staircase that will elevate you to a position that will allow a photo like the one above.
Pros: A lot of variety.
Cons: It’s a popular spot for holiday makers and locals. Not safe to pass through at high tide.
2. Rock Lane
At the end of Rock Lane, you’ll find a set of massive boulders over-looking the ocean, presenting an awesome opportunity for interesting photos and something slightly different to the usual Ballito beach. The rock is a warm brown/yellow as opposed to the black you’ll find in Sheffield beach. Once you’re done on the boulders, head down to the sand and frolic with your feet in the water, or don’t, and keep the bottom of your dress dry.
Pros: Privacy (apart from the fisherman.) It’s not a swimming beach, or well known spot. Keep your feet dry, but still get the beach look.
Cons: You may come across fishing hooks and rotting fish bones.
3. Christmas Bay
I’ve only begun shooting at this beach within the past year, and I don’t know what has taken me so long!! It has a long staircase onto the sand, which can be tricky to get back up when you have tired and cranky kids to carry, but it’s definitely worth it. Apart from the flat rocks and reflections you’re likely to get, there are also higher rocks to climb and exciting rock pools to explore.
Pros: Variety, rock pools, reflections. High chance of seeing whales during season.
Cons: I don’t think there are any, unless getting back up the stairs is a challenge for you.
4. Four Polls Beach
This beach has so much to offer, and is conveniently situated close to Salt Rock. If you’re willing to walk down the beach and over some rocks, you’ll find a little private beach, sheltered by 2 rock formations. These give interest to your shoot as you can climb on them and shoot down, or ask your families to climb up.
I’m going to go ahead and rank this beach as my number 1 choice at the moment.
Pros: Variety, convenient location.
Cons: Although it’s not a popular spot for swimming, you’ll find a few locals hanging around or walking their dogs. I can’t really say this is a con though. There’s enough beach for everyone.
5. Seaton Estate
Unfortunately this beach is exclusive to residents of Seaton and Zululami estates. If you have access though, you’re in for a treat. The very first photo I share is in the parking area, offering a completely different back drop to what you’ll get once on the beach. The dune is a hit with the kids, as well as the tree for climbing. The main attraction for me though, is the little river that runs out into the sea. It offers a ‘prop’ so to speak, that can be jumped over, or into.
Pros: Being a private beach, it’s incredibly safe and quiet. There is a lot of variety.
Cons: It’s private.
Although these are my favorite beaches to photograph at, you can’t really go wrong on the North Coast. Sand and sea are all you need, but the rocks and reflections add a nice extra touch. If you’re lucky, you might get dolphins or whales too. Good Luck!
