Sometimes the love story of a couple or the way that a family shoot makes me feel needs to be expressed in more than pictures.  Sometimes it is important to explain certain aspects of a shoot to potential clients in more than a simple FAQ post.  For such times these blog articles will fill the gap.

  • We had a massive storm in Ballito on Thursday and our electricity has been out every since. The biggest issue for me as not been the cold showers, or wasted food in the fridge - but not being able to download and start editing Tansy&Warrick’s wedding photos. 🤣

Until I’m able to edit some photos and share them with you - here’s a ‘behind the scenes’ shot from @shannongracephotography. @tangelical
  • Oh - I’m a sucker for a silhouette! @cathkilburn1 @thevenue_fontana
  • I mentioned in an earlier post that I don’t get too many ‘smiling-at-the-camera’ photos. What I DO get is a lot of ‘walking’ photos. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Reason being:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- walking gives the couple something to do⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- they’re distracted from the fact that they are being photographed ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- they relax into a natural posture and expression⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- they’re likely to begin chatting (laughing and smiling) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- it gives me a chance to think about the next shot⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- these shots are like bonus shots because they don’t expect them. It’s a nice surprise to see them in their gallery. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

  • A classic veil shot for my classic bride. @cathkilburn1 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
After about 20 minutes of shooting, Miles asked me if they were going to smile at the camera 🤣🤣🤣 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I will do one or two obvious smile-at-the-camera pics (for Gran to hang on her wall), but other than that - no. It’s just not my jam.
Because we’re constantly chatting and interacting, there will be moments when you naturally look up and smile at me. So although you won’t realize it, I AM taking photos of you smiling at the camera. They just aren’t those obvious posing ones. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This approach means that sometimes I’ve gotta pull out one or two really lame jokes. But I’m OK with you laughing at me and not with me 🤣 laughter keeps everyone relaxed and happy.
Do you have any jokes that I can add to my arsenal? Please??!! 🙌🏼
  • Does anyone else feel like the seasons changed over night? I wake up at 5:15am with Ellie and it’s SOOOO dark now. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The good news is that we can start doing sunrise shoots - like this one. Afternoon light is soft and dreamy which I love, but sunrise light is dramatic and feisty, magical in its own way!

  • 🌈 Cath&Miles - how wonderful to have something as beautiful as a rainbow to remind you of your wedding day. I’ll never see one without thinking about this moment (and all the action that took place before and after) 🤣

  • I can only imagine how it must feel to watch your child’s child getting married. If you are lucky enough to have Grandparents at your wedding, don’t forget to give them a minute of your time for a special hug. @jessjesscampbell
  • It’s gonna be a wet weekend in KZN. Are you getting married and worried about rain on your wedding day?
Please try not to worry. Your guests will have checked the report and will come prepared. If you can, arrange some umbrellas for your bridal party and bring along warm shoes. Your photographer will know what to do with you during the portrait session, so don’t even think about that.
Instead of allowing your thoughts to wander into that space of stress and fear for how the day will turn out - try to remain focused on what it’s all really about. One another!
Photographers - dark gloomy days can provide an awesome back drop for wide compositions. If you want to take things up a notch, place your couple in front of a dark area, have someone stand behind them holding a flash (+trigger) and point it at the couple. The light should catch the rain drops and create an awesome effect. .
If you need to, take a few until you get the perfect shot (move the flash further or closer to the couple. Go wide, crop tight. Try a wide angle lens and a zoom lens.) Maybe just let the couple know what you are doing and make sure that they are dry and warm ;)
Be prepared to get wet so pack spare clothes. Good luck!!
